Customer Advisory: Update – Houthi rebels attack ships in Red Sea
January 11, 2024
As we had previously informed, resulting from the continuous attacks, carriers continue to reroute many cargo ships around the Cape of Good Hope to ensure safety of crew, cargo and vessels. As of 10th January 2024, reportedly, more than 350 container vessels have been impacted by delays and/or rerouting.
As announced, this situation has led to higher costs for ship owners, resulting in additional surcharges such as the Peak Season Surcharges and “transit disruptions” related surcharges being imposed on the shippers. Additionally, as a result of this change, we anticipate longer transit times, increased nautical miles, and higher fuel consumption. Due to the change in routes and extended transit times, shipping lines may not be able to adhere to their published schedules. This applies to westbound and eastbound traffic, which we anticipate will cause additional delays.
As a result of the situation, we are currently observing an increasing risk of shortage of container equipment and space for vessel departures over the coming weeks. To that end, we advise customers to increase focus on your purchase order planning and shipment activity.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. For the latest shipment information, please track your shipments, including vessel position, through APL Logistics’ LSS+ Visibility & Reporting platform. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your APLL Representative.
Please note that as the situation remains fluid and may have changed by the time of publication of this Update, APL Logistics does not warrant its continuing accuracy.
